Step by Step Sewing Tutorial Merryweather Top from Stitch Upon a Time

I've been looking for a simple T Shirt pattern with different sleeve lengths and a v-neck option. Most importantly I've been after a pattern that has a bit of flair about the hips to cover my post baby belly.

The Merryweather Top & Dress pattern from Stitch Upon a Time fits the bill perfectly. It was also super easy to sew up.

Basic Construction

Just like most tops Stitch Upon a Time's Merryweather starts with the shoulder seams. I stitch my seams on a standard sewing machine using a strretch stitch and a ball point needle designed for stretch fabrics. Then I sew them a second time with my overlocker. This adds an extra layer of stitching so that the seam will better stand up to the demands of everyday life and it also encloses the raw edges of the fabric so that they don't fray in the wash.

Next the sleeves are sewn in place. I really like this method of sewing the sleeves onto the shoulders before the side seams are sewn. It productes a much neater finish than sewing the side seams first.

I overlock my sleeve and waist hems at this point as it's easier than trying to do it later on.

The final step in the basic garment construction is to sew the side and sleeve seams in one continuous seam from the wrist to the waist. This is so much quicker than doing them seperatley and it reduces the bulk at the underarm.

Neckband

On this top I'm going for the round neck which is super easy to sew. The neckband is simply folded in half and stitched with a straight stitch. Using a straight stitch means that the seam lies flatter than if I'd used a stretch stitch which is a wider stitch.

It's worth taking the time to press the nackband seam open. This further reduces the bulk of fabric and helps the neckband to lie flatter.

The neckband is then folded in half widthways and it gets a really good press with the iorn.

Sewing the neckband in place is really simple, you just need to use a lot of pins or clips to keep it in place while you sew. Line up the seam in the neckband with the centre back of the top and pin it in place. Then line up the centre front of the neckband with the centre front of the top and put in another pin. Then you need to line up half way between the centre front and the centre back on both the neckband and the top and pin them in place. Add another pin in between each of these four points and you should be good to sew.

Hems

Almost finished now but don't rush the hems. Take the time to measure and make sure they are nice and even. Give them a good press and stitch in place with a twin needle. Using a twin needle gives a wonderfully proffessional looking finish.
